The short answer
Use AI to prepare a worksheet that the group can challenge: what was asked, what was done, what was found and what remains uncertain. Keep each important point connected to a passage in the paper.
Start with the question the meeting needs to answer
A journal club can leave everyone with a polished summary and no clearer judgment about the paper. Before asking AI to read, finish this sentence: ‘After this discussion, we should understand whether this study changes our interpretation of [specific question].’ That gives the preparation a purpose and keeps the presentation from becoming a tour of every paragraph.
Choose one principal paper and gather its supplement, protocol or registration when available. Record the publication date and any correction. Build the worksheet before building the slides
The table below is our preparation template. Ask for a short entry in every row and a page, table or section location beside it. Separate what the authors report from your interpretation. If the paper does not state something, write ‘not reported in the supplied material.’

A prompt you can reuse next week
‘Prepare a one-page journal-club worksheet from the supplied paper and supplement. Our discussion question is [question]. Fill the five worksheet fields: question, methods, results, limitations and next reading. Give source locations for factual entries. Preserve reported units, denominators, time points and uncertainty. Separate the authors’ conclusions from your interpretation. Flag missing information. Finish with three questions that the group should debate, and do not propose a clinical recommendation.’
Read the main results table yourself before accepting the worksheet. Check that the extracted number describes the correct group, outcome and follow-up. A result copied accurately into the wrong context is still misleading. Keep the checked table visible during the meeting so discussion can return to the evidence quickly.
Give disagreement a job in the meeting

For example: ‘One answer treats missing follow-up as central; another barely discusses it. What does the paper actually report?’ That is a productive discussion prompt, not a vote on which answer sounds best.
For randomized trials, Cochrane’s risk-of-bias guidance offers a structured framework for examining a specific result. Use the appropriate appraisal method for the study design; the worksheet here is a meeting aid, not a replacement for a formal assessment. Ask the group to explain its reasoning when it identifies a limitation.
Save the conclusion the group actually reached
End with three lines: what we learned, what we still cannot conclude, and what we will read next. Keep unresolved questions alongside the source locations and date the note. Your next journal club then begins with a useful record of the discussion rather than another untraceable AI summary.
